17 year-old Ree Dolly sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. If she fails, Ree and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. The tone of this movie is genuinely fantastic, capturing the grim, lonely, scary and obscure view of the cold and dark winter in this isolated place. You can really feel how physically freezing it was there as Granick’s direction is impressively immersive and grasps a great sense of environmental conditions. Although I did find myself gazing off at times and not being stunned throughout, it’s easy to respect what the film is doing.
Jennifer Lawrence is doing stunning work here, Especially for her age at the time, she is able to perform with such depth and emotional transformation. She constantly showcases her vulnerability in rather nuanced ways.
Winter's Bone is a narrative compilation of the missing footage from The Hunger Games portraying Katniss Everdeen and her struggle to live in the poverty and squalor of District 12.
If the Oscar nominations weren't enough of a clue, this movie's greatest strength is in its characters' writing and acting. Jennifer Lawrence fully realizes her potential as the audacious, resilient and nurturing Ree, the 17-year-old daughter of a mentally absent mother and physically absent father forced to care for her two younger siblings. John Hawkes also gives a wonderful performance as the frightening but oddly sympathetic Teardrop, Ree's drug-addicted uncle.
Ree must find her father and make him appear in court or lose her family's home which was put up…
Even as genuinely engrossing as it is, I still can't shake my general suspicion of this. While it doesn't necessarily seem "inauthentic" (whatever that's supposed to mean anymore), it does feel awfully mannered. It's a have/eat cake situation, wanting to avoid representational traps/poverty porn while still relying on the innate otherness of this community to generate tension for a thriller. Perhaps my ambivalence is just a signal that it's treading that line about as carefully as it can.
Jennifer Lawrence gives a phenomenal performance here. It’s no surprise she’s become one of the best actresses in the world today. The movie itself was so downtrodden and depressing though. A whole movie of people being horrible and not wanting to help our Jen at every turn.
Until now, the only film I'd seen by the filmmaker was Leave No Trace, which I loved and helped me discover the brilliant Thomasin McKenzie and appreciate Ben Foster's work more. However, I wasn't a fan of the pacing.
In many ways, the latter is what I disliked most about the picture. Much of the film appears to be filler in the form of long drawn out scenes where little or nothing happens. Other than that, everything else is really good, from the mystery that acts as the film's anchor, which concludes in ways I didn't anticipate... until I learned it all took place in Ozark, which made me wonder if the series was influenced in any way by this…
A quiet yet compelling, exceptionally made drama, carried by a tremendous performance from Jennifer Lawrence.

Doesn’t matter how many layers you have on, the coldness of Winter’s Bone imbeds itself under your skin, clinging so tight you just can’t seem to shake it.
Atmospherically, I found Winter’s Bone extremely reminiscent to Wind River, perhaps one of my favorite films of all time, so I had a significantly good time throughout the duration of this story of survival, poverty, and kinship.
Jennifer Lawrence not only acts like a girl with the world on her shoulders, she carries herself like one too. Her nomination for Best Actress was fiercely well deserved. All of Winter’s Bone’s Oscar nominations were fiercely well deserved.

this was good, it just felt like something was missing, i'm not sure what though. this may be one of my favourite jennifer lawrence performances, i loved how stripped back and gritty it was.
